A Shopify commerce workflow succeeds when store and online activity share deliberate record ownership, not merely when a connector transfers some fields. Shopify POS, Lightspeed, and Square should be compared by tracing products, inventory, customers, orders, returns, and corrections from origin to final state.

Buyer constraint: one unit is promised across channels

Picture a retailer with the last unit visible online while a store associate is preparing to sell it. An online order arrives as the in-store basket remains open, followed by a return at another location. The business needs a defined reservation event, latency expectation, and exception response before staff promise availability.

Shopify POS is the natural hypothesis when Shopify is intended as the commerce center. Lightspeed deserves review when retail inventory or location operations require more depth. Square can fit a smaller integrated merchant stack, subject to a current, supported connection path.

Decision criteria for the commerce source of truth

Name the owner for product titles, variants, barcodes, prices, promotions, tax fields, inventory by location, reservations, customers, orders, fulfillment, cancellations, refunds, returns, and gift value. Document field direction, sync trigger, expected latency, conflict rule, retry behavior, historical import, and connector support owner.

Do not let matching totals hide mismatched order detail. Staff should be able to move from a Shopify order identifier to the POS record and back, including corrections. A connection also does not establish correct sales-tax treatment; the merchant remains responsible for applicable jurisdiction and product decisions.

Reproducible mini-check for cross-channel state

Create a fictional product with variants and scarce location stock. Publish it online, place an online order, begin an in-store sale of the same variant, cancel one path, return another item in store, and change a customer detail. Introduce an invalid mapping or paused connector before one correction.

Restore the connection and inspect inventory, order, customer, refund, and finance records for duplicates or silent overwrites. POS Platform Guide has not executed this configured workflow; the buyer should use synthetic data and supported test tools.

Exception and verdict: the connector replays stale inventory

Suppose a repaired sync sends an older stock value after a newer sale. The architecture should resolve events through controlled ownership and traceable identifiers, not whichever update arrives last.

Choose Shopify POS for the most direct Shopify-centered model, Lightspeed for stronger retail operations when the connection proves dependable, or Square for simpler needs with a verified path. Reject any design whose inventory authority changes during an outage.
