Apparel checkout is an inventory decision disguised as a payment. The system must identify the exact style, color, and size, then preserve that identity through promotions, returns, exchanges, transfers, and online orders. Buyer constraint: the exchanged unit is not interchangeable

Picture a shopper returning one size bought online and exchanging it in store for another color while a promotion has changed. Staff need to find the original order, apply the approved policy, put the correct unit back into the correct status, and avoid promising it twice.

Shopify POS is strongest as a hypothesis when Shopify commerce is the intended center. Lightspeed merits emphasis where retail inventory and location operations need greater depth. Square can suit a smaller retailer that values an integrated merchant ecosystem. The configured return and inventory flow should determine fit.

Decision criteria for variants and channel ownership

Inspect variant creation, barcode assignment, receiving, transfers, counts, reservations, available-to-sell logic, bundles, promotions, discounts, exchanges, damaged-return status, gift value, customer lookup, permissions, and audit history. For online overlap, name the source of truth for products, inventory, orders, customers, and returns.

A sales-tax field or rate service does not prove correct treatment. The retailer and its advisers remain responsible for jurisdictions, product rules, exemptions, filing, and reconciliation. Test that tax details remain visible when an order crosses channels or is partially returned.

Reproducible mini-check for an omnichannel exchange

Create synthetic products with similar variants and barcodes. Receive them into separate locations, reserve one online, sell another in store, exchange a third across size and color, return an item as damaged, and run a count correction. Apply a temporary promotion, then inspect the original and corrected documents.

Exception and verdict: a return becomes sellable too early

Suppose a returned garment needs inspection but immediately reappears as available online. The system should support a controlled status and show who releases it. Otherwise, staff may create an order they cannot fulfill.

Choose Shopify POS for Shopify-centered commerce, Lightspeed for deeper retail operations, or Square for a simpler integrated stack. Reject any setup that loses variant identity or silently changes inventory availability during an exchange.
