Buyer constraint: the line continues when a peripheral fails

Imagine a cashier scanning a mixed basket when the barcode reader disconnects, an item has the wrong description, and a shift change is approaching. Staff need an approved fallback that preserves item identity, price authority, cash accountability, and any store-required restricted-sale checks.

Clover may fit a hardware-led setup, but processor, reseller, contract, app, and support responsibilities must be named. Lightspeed merits attention for deeper retail inventory and location operations. Square is relevant where an integrated small-business ecosystem is sufficient.

Decision criteria for counter and shift control

Evaluate barcode speed, item lookup, catalog approval, multipack handling, promotions, returns, cash-drawer assignment, paid-in or paid-out controls, safe-drop recording, role permissions, shift close, scanners, printers, customer displays, network recovery, inventory counts, and exports. Ask how an urgent item correction reaches every register.

Age prompts, tax settings, and payment functionality are operational tools, not proof of legal or PCI DSS compliance. The merchant must establish applicable laws, product treatment, employee procedures, device and network controls, provider responsibilities, and validation with qualified guidance.

Reproducible mini-check with a mixed basket

Build a fictional catalog containing look-alike barcodes, a multipack, an item with a changed description, a return, and a store-defined restricted item. Scan the basket, disconnect the scanner, use the approved lookup fallback, request the restricted-sale step, change cashier, correct an item with manager approval, and close the drawer.

Exception and verdict: the register receives a stale item record

Suppose one register retains an old item description or store-defined control after a catalog update. The system should expose version or sync state and provide a safe response, not let staff guess which record governs the sale.

Choose Clover only with clear channel accountability, Lightspeed for deeper retail control, or Square for integrated simplicity. Reject any setup whose peripheral or catalog failure bypasses an owned store procedure.
